Research On Prions Disease

Dna modification

Scientists have found that prion proteins are not essential for survival. Scientists have shown that a mice lacking the gene for prion protein can resist infectious prions. This suggests that maybe reducing prion proteins in neurons could reduce the chance of getting prions disease. One of the ways to reduce prion protein in the body is to turn off the gene coding for prion protein. And that can be done through DNA modification called methylation. Even though this is a step towards finding a cure or treatment unfortunately we are not there yet, maybe as technology gets better we will soon have a cure.
