Acquired prions disease happens when someone is exposed to contaminated food or equipment.


Kuru

Kuru is a rare fatal brain disorder caused by infectious misfolded proteins transmitted through ritual cannibalism. It mostly affect the people of Papau New Guinea.


Transmitted by eating the brain or other tissue of deceased people.

Early symptoms include shivering tremors, slurred speech, mood changes and leads to difficulty eating.

Outcome is death from starvation or infection in comatose stage.


Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD)

Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is rare, fatal brain disorder cause by consuming food infected with Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE or "mad cow disease")


Early symptoms are depression, anxiety.

When the disease progresses the symptoms worsen, difficulty walking, involuntary jerk movements, dementia, and paralysis.


Iatrogenic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (iCJD)


Latrogenic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is a rare form of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease that is transmitted through medical or surgical procedure mainly through contaminated tools or donated human tissue.


Symptoms of Latrogenic Creuztzfedt-Jakob disease are dimentia, behavior changes, and motor control problems.
